A CAMPAIGN FOR MORE ACCEPTANCE AND LESS DISCRIMINATION
During the summer term of 2020, my team and I developed a campaign for a course supervised by Prof. Barbara Kotte at the University of Arts Berlin. A significant event that influenced our direction was the tragic murder of George Floyd in May of that year.
My group, consisting of Felix Hein, Maria Feist, Lisa Köhli, Luan Seidel, and myself, decided to focus on the issue of 'microaggressions.' Microaggressions are subtle, often unintentional actions or comments that show prejudice or discrimination towards marginalized groups. These can be verbal, non-verbal, or environmental and, although they may seem minor, they can have a significant negative impact over time. Examples include compliments that imply surprise at someone's ability because of their race, gender, or disability, or repeatedly mispronouncing someone's name. Microaggressions can create a hostile or uncomfortable environment for those affected.
Our approach was to highlight the experiences of people victimized by microaggressions, giving them a platform to 'tell' their stories through posters, stickers, and Instagram posts. The stories we shared were real and provided by individuals who participated in our survey, sharing interactions and incidents that happened to them. The posters focused on the general experience of being a foreigner in a country and feeling the need to defend one's presence. Meanwhile, the social media posts concentrated on discrimination in and around the workplace for People of Color, as these were the most frequently shared stories.
